This printer is great, I am owner and designer for my greeting card business and having a good printer is the heart beat of my business. Let me tell you I did not decide on this printer lightly. I had researched for a month before decided to get this model. I went through Epson which is the brand I usually stick to, then hp, then Xerox and then Canon. The main reason I chose this model was that I needed to be able to print on 300gsm or above very easily. All the other brands do not print up to this weight of paper. Their max is 270gsm some even lower. Of course you can use thinker paper like I did with my old Epson printer but you will struggle long term and that could make your printer give up a lot quicker. This Canon model is great because it has 2 ways it handles paper. Your thin standard paper goes in a draw underneath the printer (very cool) and for your thinker paper you fed it from the back of the printer. For print cartridges you do have more 6 in total where before I only had 4 but if you can get compatibles you fine. This printer gets better it has a lcd display which allow you to scan, copy, print graph, lined paper and more options. It scans so fast at if you blink you will miss it. Its a lot more money than what I usually spend but as it's for the business and this is the only model that can handle thick sheets this was the printer for me. It is a good investment in the long term.Canon PIXMA MP990 Network ready Ultimate All-In-One Photo Printer

 "The Canon PIXMA MP990 is a Fantastic All-in-one." 2010-05-01

Fantastic product and excellent service from Amazon with a saving of about £80 below local shops and delivery within 2 days which is free! Anyone who wishes to print excellent quality photo prints including direct from slides and/or negatives and fantastic quality scans should go for this all-in-one. I was afraid that ink usage would be high from reading other reviews but with 6 ink tanks including 2 blacks and a grey this is not a problem at all. Duplex printing on 'fast' is remarkable quality so I recommend this from Amazon 100%.

 "excellent" 2010-04-17
By M. Bull (Folkestone, UK)
I really like this printer. It was easy to set up on my iMac, and two MacBooks, running Leopard and Snow Leopard alike - I have it connected to my wireless network and it works flawlessly.

Photos are to me indistinguishable from ones done at Photobox. Black & white photos seem to have a very slight colour cast, but perhaps not as marked as with Photobox. But don't expect the same quality of tone and contrast as you'd get with a darkroom b&w print.

Scanning (in color) seemed a little slow, but I can live with that. Quality of output was great though, with colours only slightly paler than the original (possibly because of cheap paper).

This printer is quite a bit more expensive than other multi-purpose printers, but I feel it's worth the £100 or so extra for the excellent quality of photo prints, photo negative/slide scanning, and general scanning and copying. The MP990 is as good as you're going to get without entering the expensive A3+ pro market.

I haven't had this multifunctional Printer, scanner for more than a few weeks and sadly the scanner seems to have a fault. I hope the replacement will resolve what should be a smart compact piece of kit.

 "Canon Mp990 printer" 2010-04-08

I've been searching for a decent printer which would satisfy my interests in photography. Having researched my needs on the net, this one fits the bill. It may not be perfect - on the negative side:

- it used up the grey ink like it was going out of style. ( 11 x Black A4 / 8 x A4 colour/ 5 x 6 by 4 Black and 8 x 6 by 4 Colour prints)for one cartridge.

- the ink cartridges seem to contain less ink with each new printer introduced by canon (this is my third over the years).

- Inconsistant printing times for similar print sizes.

- It chunters on (using up ink?) during printing.

Having said that I was aware of the above problems before buying the printer but bought it because of the feedback on the quality of printing.

On the positive side the print quality is excellent. I was impressed with the black and white prints which is the main reason I bought the printer in the first place. Once set up the colours were sharp and true to form.

It is possible to buy more reasonably priced compatible cartridges from the net but I cannot vouch for the quality of the results as I have not tried any as yet. I'd appreciate any suggestions as to where to purchase good quality compatible inks.

I have used the scanner a few times and once again was impressed with the results. So far I have not used the duplex printing or Cd printing options.

All in all I am pleased with my purchase from Amazon as their service is second to none and I have used them on numerous occassions without any problems.

The MP990 is a good all in one printer which I would recommend to anyone with a limited budget and space in which to work.
