"Great quality printer, but has some connection issues" 2010-05-13
By Tim B. (Rugby, England)
Bought this to replace an Epson printer. Compared quite a few models from various different manufacturers and ended up going for Canon on reputation. Decided to spend a bit more than a bargain basement price to get something decent.

Generally, we are really happy. Quality of printing cannot be faulted for our purposes and is certainly better than our old Epson. Seperate trays for normal and photo paper is useful - although not so useful that one of them (photo paper) is at the back of the printer, so inaccessible if the printer is on a shelf of a computer desk.

Part of the reason for buying this was the Wifi feature - however - this proved unreliable for us. The printer was located virtually next to the router, and yet sometimes seemed to 'disappear', therefore had to resort to plugging it in by network cable - rendering the Wifi feature useless.

Also, when installing the software on different PCs, sometimes they struggle to 'see' the printer on the network, so the software refuses to install - have often had to redo the install several times, reboot etc. before the software finally finds the printer and installs. Once installed, it always seems to work fine.

Final thing, we seem to use more ink than we did with the old Epson printer, but difficult to compare.

So, quality printer but not without some connection issues.

 "PIXMA MP640" 2010-05-06
By JD (UK)
I needed a replacement for an Epson R300 that was getting unreliable and costly to run.

I searched for ages and read plenty of reviews of printers up to £200.

In an emergency, I plumped for an Epson SX515W from a local PC store. This was difficult to set up as the driver for the scanner clashed with an existing installation on my Mac but the error message was far from helpful. It was finally connected after about two hours of reinstalling and searching for redundant drivers. Wireless was intermittent. The Epson was printing odd patchy marks at the top and bottom of prints and multiple runs of the head clean made little to no difference. I gave up after using half the ink on head cleans and returned it to the store.

I finally decided on the Canon MP640 despite preferring the Premium Semi Gloss paper supplied by Epson. The Canon papers all seem to be glossy, but different thicknesses. I had seen a similar Canon model printing on Ilford paper at the Focus on Imaging show at the NEC, with impressive results. I planned to use the Canon with Ilford paper with a similar finish to the Epson media.

The printing on the included Canon paper is of a very high standard.

The printing on Epson Premium Semi Gloss was also very good. If the prints are as durable as they were with the Epson ink, they will be perfectly fine.

Printing on the Ilford Galerie Smooth Lustre Duo paper was variable. Often the colours looked dark and overly heavy. It gave a rather flat image. Disappointing seeing as I had ordered 100 sheets of it!

Time will tell whether I can find suitable alternatives to the Canon paper, or if I will have to use the manufacturers own.

I would recommend the printer. Build quality is better than the Epson. Wireless connection is faultless. Print quality can be excellent on the correct paper.

Amazon prices were the best around. It was certainly better than buying locally at premium prices. Delivery on the free service was quick enough.

"Probably the best priniter in the block" 2010-05-04
By Peter Townsend (United Kingdom)
I've had HP printers for the past 10 years - printer scanner copiers; they served me well, but I felt like a change. I did a lot of checks and comparisons; the main features that swayed me to this printer are - double-sided/duplex, wireless and cd/dvd printing.

There are many other features that help to give this machine the "wow" factor; The software and menu interface is easy and a pleasure to use.

When pinting on dvd/cd's you can use a small photo; the printer software will magnify the image, so that it fills the dvd/cd disc face - all without the use of a pc, and just a few menu selections. I'll be using the cd/dvd prinit feature a lot more; archiving photos, saving sky+ programmes to disc; MP3 cd's etc.

Printing user manuals on A5 paper with the double sided feature is a breeze; giving excellent results - even in fast mode.

Inks can be expensive when used a lot, though pc world have a decent range costing half the usual price (e.g 5.99); used with no quality reduction.

The wireless onnection was easy to setup and remains very reliable for three pc's.

Scanning to memory card or pc is easy to complete.

Build quality is good; certainly better than some of the recent HP machines that appear flimsy.

I would thoroughly recommend this printer.
