"Identify and buy the right printer for your needs." 2010-05-18
By Englander (Wales, UK)
I bought the Epson R800 in 2007 and it's still giving excellent service. I use it only for producing exhibition quality prints. There are cheaper printers using cheaper inks for producing numerous run-of-the-mill photos. Horses for courses as they say. I have not experienced blocked nozzles with this printer, despite 3 to 4 weeks between printings. My standard practice is to make at least one 4x6 colour print every 3 weeks or so. This seems to keep the print heads healthy. Only once, when I moved from London to Wales, did I have to realign the print heads to cure banding probably caused by the vibration in moving. In 2008 I attended the Epson Print Academy and gained insight into colour printing techniques and why Ultrachrome pigment ink cartridges are expensive. This was not just a propaganda exercise by Epson but actually assisted me in the production of better prints. There is no perceptible variation in colour matching between batches of ink cartridges and the ink technology involved is very specialised. The horror stories that I read in the various reviews of this printer only lead me to suspect that some users have not identified what they really need in a printer and matched it to the kind of printer they should buy.

 "Feel very stupid" 2010-04-04
By Caron Buxton (England)
I gave Epson another chance (3rd time unlucky).

Photography teacher told me I should go with Epson for print quality so this is the 3rd one I've bought in as many years but NEVER again. The same thing always happens- ink runs out EXTREMELY quickly. Extortionate price to buy more and I mean EXPENSIVE. Then, it starts playing up printing with banding even though inks are new and original.

AND it won't print at all if any ink runs out even if you just need black, if pink runs out printer won't work. And now after having replaced the inks to the tune of £70.00 (and that's with getting some cheaper off ebay!) it only prints everything washed out and faded looking. WHAT a waste of time, effort, money, the world's resources! What am I supposed to do with it? I don't want to give it to Oxfam and burden some other poor soul with the heap of junk and certainly don't want to send it to landfill. What a waste of everything. Epson should be ashamed.

a good printer to use with my Dslr an old model but make fantasic prints , on the down side used 7 ink carts that run out very quickley so expensive to run , but if hooked up to a quilty ink system with UK back up ,cut your printing cost to a very low cost , makes it well worth having this printer

 "This printer drinks ink" 2009-12-29
By C. Orso
This printer drinks ink which costs a fortune to replace - £96 for our last full set of inks. That's virtually half the price of the printer. Unless you have deep pockets or someone else is paying I wouldn't recommend.

 "A brilliant machine" 2009-11-03
By David J. Mummery (UK)
This is probably the best photo printer in the market unless you go for the professional machines. It is fairly economical on ink and produces photographs of excellent quality.
