"Loud, slow and very expensive because of the chip" 2010-04-13
By Customer from London (London)
Got this printer about 18 months ago. I used it about once a month. The cartridges are empty in no time and cost a fortune if you buy them new. You think you can refill them and get away cheapter - that's what I used to do with my previous Lexmark. Well, you may get away with it with the black cartridge. But once the colour cartridge is empty, the printer will not work, neither will the scanner or the copier. The thing with the new Canon printers is that the cartridge has a chip inserted, which monitors ink levels. Even if you deactivate it (like I did), at some point Error 5 will pop up and you won't be able to use the thing even if your cartridges are full.

A chip resetter isn't available on the market. You have the choice to buy new cartridges (at 12 pounds for black, and 16 pounds for colour) and then realize they're empty after 50 prints because they're tiny. The printing quality is appalling, blue is smudged, black is rather faded. Even if you think you get away with refilling black and never using the colour cartridge so it stays full, it won't work because, since the printer monitors ink levels, it will start using colour automatically as soon as it think's black's empty even if you've refilled it.

The noise of the printer is very loud. There is the option of noise diminishing but boy is it slow. The actual printing speed is worse than my previous, cheap, old Lexmark. Scanning takes forever.

All in all, you may think you got a all-in-one product that could do everything, but maintenance costs and costs per print are very high and not worth it in the long run.

A product I would not recommend.

 "Great printer, scanner, photocopier" 2010-03-17
By L. Aspden (UK)
This printer is great. Albeit a little bulky, the printer is neat and well finished.

I use the printer very regularly and it's printing quality is brilliant, there are also fantastic controls which enable you to manage the style and quality of your print. This makes it extrememly flexible and suitable for a variety of needs, from printing low quality quick prints, to high quality pictures.

The scanner and software is highly useful.

I would recommend buying refillable cartridges. It eats ink very quickly and the Canon ink cartridges have limited ink (and a smaller sponge to hold the ink than refillable ones).

 "Great printer" 2010-02-14
By Jess
I love my printer, great quality reliable, quick. Ive had it quite a few years now and its got plenty of life in it yet. I always use canon inks and there so reliable i wouldnt change. Some people have moaned about it not feeding straight but i find thta as long as you knock it all back straight when its slumping your alright, its a small prob for a great printer. The first one that arrived did stop feeding after about a day but a replacement was sent out and all is well. Your going to get a few duffs in any mass produced goods but the company are great and canons are a name to trust. Great buy!

 "Only lasted 18 months" 2010-01-21
By Mrs. N. K. Pedley (Bournemouth, U.K.)
'You get what you pay for' is a phrase I should have remembered before buying this printer. It worked well at first, but found that the replacement ink was very expensive. After 18 months the paper feed stopped working and despite following the troubleshooting guide have not been able to rectify the fault. All Canon could do was to advise me to take it to get it serviced but I think that it would be cheaper to buy a new printer, which I will be doing, but not a Canon. :0(

By Mrs. D. E. Smart
Brilliant printer - good photos. Much better than the Epson I owned previously. My only criticism is that the ink cartidges are expensive (but they last longer than the Epson, which was forever wasting ink "cleaning" it's printheads) and it doesn't like cloned cartridges at all (doesn't recognise them). However, don't throw your empty cartridges away - you can sell them on a well known internet auction site!

 "superb A4 printer" 2008-02-04
By A. Barnes (leics, uk)
Can't fault the print quality when printing photos. Set mine up by downloading driver directly from the website. This gives all the latest updates.(though it is slow). No problems with vista this way. Love the fact i can leave 6x4 photo paper in a separate tray and have A4 non photo in at the same time. Printing direct from the memory card is also very good and saves a lot of time.( Helps if your camera does good j-pegs like my fuji S6500).Yes, A3 would be nice, but would be 4x the price of this.Great value for such good quality. Hp inks are too expensive, though the compatibles i,ve used are great.

"Great cost effective home photo printer" 2007-12-30
By Mr. D. Williams (UK)
printer arrived from amazon quickly and was dead easy to setup.

Had my sony cameras printing via pict bridge in minutes.

For the price I am really impressed with the output quality, however the colour matching seemed a little bit dark but i am sure with some adjustment this will be fine.

 "A little beauty!" 2007-12-11
By D. Cockell
This machine replaced an ageing HP Photosmart 1215 and what a difference! The setup was very easy. I had a Vista disk in with the machine but I still had to go online to download the Vista update. However, no problems here and machine was soon up and running. The only glitch I have is at start up when a dialog box informs me that the HP CUE Status isn't running and is unable to load. Whatever it is, this doesn't seem to affect the overall running of the printer. I like the fact that HP printers store the paper horizontally so you don't get that annoying curling of the paper as you do with certain other makes! No problems using touch screen for controlling the machine. Printer is highly recommended for the price.

"great prints - not great feed." 2007-11-07
By W. A. Buckley (Herne Bay, Kent United Kingdom)
This printer can produce excellent colour prints - with a bit of judicious setting-up, but, and it's a big but - if you want your A4 240g/m2 paper to emerge every time I would forget it. Photo paper feed, especially erring on the heavy side (240 incidentally should be well within this printers' capabilities) is - well let's just say the chances are slim that you'll ever see your print. Now the inherent snag with this type of paper feed is that you can't tell if the paper is jamming until waiting for a couple of minutes (or for hell to freeze over) to find that your paper is still wound around the back rollers (after removing the backplate) or not gone in at all. These are not great traits for a fairly expensive printer. Not to mention the massive loss of ink printing all over the rollers!! Ordinary A4? No problem at all. It's a shame because on the rare occasions the paper does emerge the results are very good. Sorry but it's a daft printer with great potential if only HP could sort out basic problems - i.e. getting the feed to work properly with heavy-ish photo paper. And yes - you should be able to use other makes other than HP papers - obviously. Maybe not so smart!! One to avoid

 "good while it lasted" 2007-11-06
By Daniel Dalton
2 stars for the 6 months of reliable, colour fast, predictable, photo prints i had from it. Inks are available and cheapish, HP paper is glossy, and the profiles are true.

Personally, and in the future, i'd save up for an A3 printer instead... it would be nice to be able to make 20x30cm prints for framing, slightly larger than this can manage.

All of this is unimportant however, as the printer stopped working afte 6 months. It won't recognise paper in the feeds (either of them). HP customer service is hopeless, either automated step-fixes (clearly this is a known issue) that don't fix, and that one MUST work through with the technicians repeatedly... why people won't accept that you've already tried these things is incomprehensible to me: were I cynical, I might feel that these were just frustrating and procrastinating tactics designed to put me off purusing my consumer rights. If not that, then there's an endless string of kafka-esque pillar-to-post passing around between departments, automated, and email helpdesks, all this despite being within guarantee. All i wanted was a replacement!

I think a view of the HP website shows that the emphasis is on business customers, where I presume most of their trade is done.

It's cheap enough, and worked well enough for a while, that £75 for 6 months of printing raises it above one star, just. I will not, however, buy HP again, particularly given the glowing reports of, for example canon's customer service.

Incidentally, amazon have been very poor in their response to my problem (asking me to contact HP, rofl). This isn't the basis for my rating, and is the exception in my experience; but a disappointment.

"Great prints but shoddy build quality" 2009-05-14
By C. Cousins (Brighton, UK)
When it prints, this product is capable of stunning results, even if it does eat ink and take up half a desk - it's such a shame that the build quality is so awful, the paper trays are plastic-y and feel cheap, paper loading is clumsy through either tray and the worst part is the stupid paper jam sensor, which now stops 90% of my prints after getting a third of the way through, reporting a non-existent paper jam. After just over a year this printer is now effectively dead. Steer clear.

 "HP 9180 Printer" 2009-05-13
By Janman (UK)
Research on the Internet led me to this printer. As usual AFTER ordering it I found reviews that weren't so favourable. I plugged in it via Ethernet cable, installed the Photoshop plug-in and couldn't believe the quality of the print that came out. I would not know the difference between this printer's output and a photo lab, plus you can print at up to A3+ size! The plug-in makes printing a breeze, what you see on screen is what you get! Simply set the paper size, type of paper, whether you want a border or not and press Print, it's that easy. Superb printer.

 "nice printer but....." 2009-05-10
By D. C. BROWN (West, west cornwall, on the very edge)
I have had this printer for about 6 months now. It is capable of very good results, both in colour and black and white. It does not seen particularly thirsty regarding ink, when compared to other printers.

But I am getting really annoyed by the printer's demand for 3 sheets of premium photo paper, every time it is switched off. I know, I know printers have to be kept on all of the time. But having to move the printer to retrieve a child's watch that had fallen behind it, turning of the house electric to fit a new light fitting, even a power outage of half a second during a thunder storm, results in the dam thing demanding 3 sheets of paper before it will accept a new print job. Can't there be simple override or something? I once ran out of the premium glossy A 4 paper over the weekend (it won't accept anything else, like a spoilt child) so could not print out any photos, even though I had plenty of A3 matt Harman warmtone, that I prefer for Black and white.

Oh come of HP write a software revision, or some patch to allow the user/owner to overriding this irritation.

"SO glad I took the gamble on this one" 2009-04-04
By Mark Reid (Ayrshire, UK)
Let me first start by saying that I've not owned an HP printer since 1995 as I wasn't keen on the print quality, and so I ended up with Epson and stuck with them until very recently... so I'm far from being an HP "fanboy", and that's why I was reluctant to switch from Epson.

My reason for switching was because I wanted true black and white prints, and all of the review sites showed that this was the closest you could possibly get without using film and a darkroom. My Epson at the time, which was still great, don't get me wrong... printed black and white prints with a greenish hue and this hue would worsen over time.

The HP 9180 was expensive, considering I was only wanting to use them for printing out my own photography... but the reviews spoke for themselves and so I decided to take the plunge and spent almost £600 at the time. It really was a considerable gamble at the time.

It arrived in a HUGE box, and I went through the setup process which took just under 25 minutes from switching on, to the point where the closed loop calibration had finished the permanent setup. I printed off my first test print on Hahnemule Photo Rag Pearl A3 and was literally stunned by the quality and detail, as well as the colour accuracy. I stood looking at it, wondering how I ever managed before... and I didn't have to do anything at all. No setting up of colour profiles, no fancy driver manipulation... just a straight print from Photoshop using the Photosmart Pro print option.

To put it bluntly, this is the best quality printer I've ever owned. I've had it now since June 2008 and it's been used heavily, but the ink consumption is very low. I used to work in the print industry and was used to the extremely high quality of a chromalin proof, but this print surpassed that. I have printed 80 x A3 canvas prints (Hahnemule Monet Canvas A3) and around 60 x A3 art prints (Hahnemule Photo Rag Pearl A3) and I'm still on my second set of inks.

The black and white prints are incredible, with deep blacks, clear whites and a clear gamut in between. The detail is quite amazing - I took one particular shot of the gardens at Sanssouci in Potsdamm... looked great on the camera, looked great in Photoshop... but when it was printed out on the 9180 it opened up a whole new level of detail that I had never imagined was possible with what is essentially a home printer. Every blade of grass, every leaf... detailed to perfection. My colour prints are no different, with a realism that isn't tainted by undersaturated colours. The first black and white print from my test run is still exactly as it was when first printed - no changes in hue or contrast, while two Epson black and whites from the day before are now rusty in colour (printed on Fuji paper) and green/blue in colour (printed on Epson's own Premium Glossy Photo paper) so I was surprised to see that the HP print remained the same.

It's important to note that HP don't recommend switching the printer off because it performs routine maintenance on itself a few times per week, checking the alignment, checking the print heads and (where necessary) performing the closed loop calibration. The other reviewer who spoke of it taking an unnecessary amount of time to become ready after you switch it on is experiencing this because the printer it intelligent enough to recognise that it's been switched off for some time and would therefore be open to atmospheric changes which could shift alignment (temperature changes etc) so it's advisable to let the printer remain on at all times - the ink doesn't seem to deplete when it's inactive anyway and the power consumption is low.

One thing I would say is that I had always used Ilford Gallerie paper with my Epson printers, but it doesn't work well with the HP 9180 because of the type of pigment inks it uses. The colour accuracy is terrible with the Ilford paper but if you use HPs own or the Hahnemule range (which I have fallen in love with!) then you are guaranteed fine art quality prints every time.

Another reviewer mentioned the bad paper handling with skewed prints - I can't honestly say that I've ever found that with this printer. There are very clear guide marks on the speciality paper feed which allow you to align the paper/canvas perfectly and it doesn't move out of alignment. It could be that they have their printer too close to a back wall, in which case the print material bunched up behind and forced movement, but I've never experienced this.

To summarise.. I think it's an exceptional machine, and very much worth the money for someone who wants to produce professional quality prints at a reasonable cost.

"Probably the best of what is available." 2009-03-01
By M. Cohen (Surrey UK)
This is our second printer the first having failed within two years and having constant software problems during that time. Both printers have had problems with the edge of areas of dark colour but the results are, on the whole, very good which is why we bought the same machine again despite the problems with the first. The printer always defaults to high quality photo paper which makes for very slow printing of general material if you forget to change the setting before each individual item. If you need an A3 photo quality printer printer that has to fit in a height limited space it is currently your only choice. A further plus is that it uses larger cartridges than the competition requiring fewer changes.

"High Quality prints at low price!!!" 2010-04-01
By RellyBoy
Has all the features I needed. Photocopying is fast on both B/W & Color. Photo prints are great, looks like they were printed in commercial printing shops especially when you use HP recommended photo papers. Text prints look like laser prints in quality especially the black texts, you'll be surprised of the printouts. Another cool feature is that you can print directly from a memory card or USB drive. You can even scan photos or documents and save them to memory card or USB drive. Direct DVD/CD printing is unbelievable! All in all, setup and configuration is easy as 1-2-3, and changing ink cartridges are even more easier.

This printer is very good indeed - fast and efficient - delivery though was a bit of a mess - I tracked the item and when it was "en route" it was not and so on and when I telephoned to chase, was given incorrect information, however, it arrived eventually! Pity the injets are so expensive, however, I would recommend the printer without doubt!

By Mrs. K. Hodgson (Durham, England)
I bought the HP Photosmart C5380 after my Cannon MP 750 died suddenly and I needed a printer quickly. I didn't expect to love it as much as my Cannon, but it had good reviews and was a lot cheaper. Excellent choice! It is really user friendly and printing is fast and good quality. It doesn't have the multi-page feeder that my old one had, but for the money, I can live without.

Only downside is it makes some rather strange clicking & whirring sounds from time to time - a bit like sharing my study with a friendly little E.T.

On the whole, I'm more than happy with my purchase.

"A good buy in printers" 2009-12-06
By H. P. Davies (Wales)
I am delighted with my Photosmart C5380 All-in-One. I have not used all the facilities yet but have found it prints lab quality photographs from either camera, card,or computer the prints are crisp and clear even enlarging sections on to A4.

The printing on documents is very sharp even on the small lettering and when a multi paged document is printed the last page is printed first putting the finished pages in the correct order ie first page on the top.

I would recomend this printer for home or small office use the only drawback to the machine is that the noise during set up is high .

Moreover, it does not need much space because it is compact. The price of one picture is less than to have it printed out in the shop.

"A wonderful budget Photo Printer." 2005-11-23
By Mr. Peter Hayes (London, UK)
I upgraded from a Photosmart 125 to this model for the better looks and the addition of a preview screen. I'm very impressed.
The preview screen is clear and the menu's easy to navigate. The control buttons are easy to use and provide adequate feedback.
I've yet to have one paper jam and the print quality has been excellent, much improved over the 125 model I had previous.

It looks much better than previous models, but it's not perfect. Instead of making the entire chassis out of white plastic they chose to only make the trays white. Thus the actual chassis is grey. A weird choice.

It has support for the usual data cards as well as being able to plug in USB thumb-drives and bluetooth dongles. Again, very impressed.

The printer is easy to use, has excellent features and amazingly good value, I was surprised at the current selling price on Amazon. Highly recommended!
