"Five Star Prints Three Star Performance" 2010-06-27
By murray
I bought the PX700W just when the 710 was released so I got it at a good discount even though the 710 appears to be the same specification.

The print quality is superb but I still have problems with the feed and usually end up hand feeding individual sheets.

Set up I found difficult and although I think I have now mastered the wireless connections I prefer to print photos through Picasa rather than the Epson program. and scanning I also do through Picasa.

Copying is quick and easy from the front panel.

But the graphic display panel is time consuming to go through all the options for other uses.

I don't need the small sheet feeder and disc feeder and yet the print procedure goes through slowly checking these first before taking (or not taking) a sheet from the A4 feeder.

It would be good if I could have perhaps three standard settings and it would go straight to one of these. As it is every time I have to check every preference before printing since it defaults to Epson Glossy every time. Once set up it prints B&W very fast. and the colours are brilliant for the photographs.

Cartridges are very easy to change. I buy mine from Amazon where Bentham's have a good price.

The reason I chose it was because of the high pixels available which at the time the HP competition didn't have.

I'm not complaining too much. I bought a fabulous printer at a good price, but I think, since all my previous printers have been HP, I am a bit conditioned to HP simplicity and ruggedness.

 "hidden costs not mentioned!!" 2010-06-21
By P. Brouwer (UK)
In addition to all the other comments/reviews.

There is one element Epson never mentions in their documentation. It is the cost to for the need of a service on your printer when the 'absorption pads' have to be replaced.

What is this?

Most epson printers need to get rid of the excess of inkt produced during a cleaning cycle. In the PX-700 this is done by flushing the ink to a reservoir packed with absorption material. It can be accessed from the right bottom of the printer.

The printer software monitors the number of cleaning cycles and have a prediction counter on when the reservoir will be full. When that counter reaches its threshold the printer gives a warning that it needs a service. After a while the printer stops working until this servie has been performed.

This service is NOT free. One needs to go to an Epson approved service center in your area to get this fixed.

This is not mentioned in any of Epson's documentation!

"Only lasts 18 months then costs more to repair than replace!" 2010-05-17
By A. Sacks (London)
I was very pleased with this printer for the first 15 months. Then it started 'drinking' ink very fast and I am now getting the message Printer ink pads coming to the end of its life. On communicating with Epson Tech Support, they tell me it will be more to repair than to replace. Is 18 months reasonable use for a printer in this price range???

 "Rubbish printer" 2010-04-15
By Rodge Slape (Yorkshire, England)
I have had the Epson PX 700W for a little over a year and I am about to throw it in the skip. It is very hungry for ink, delivers the worst photoprints I have ever seen and has now stopped working entirely because it needs new ink pads!!

The cost of running this printer is exhorbitant and I will never, ever buy another Epson product. It may look good...glossy finish, but as a working printer it is a total failure.

My recommendation is to stay as far away from it as possible.

 "Utter Junk" 2010-04-09
By Mr. M. Slater (Manchester, UK)
Epson Photo R200 and R220's were great. They were robust, lasted well, functional and cheap to run. I bought the PX700W as a device to replace my scanner, and to provide printing (including disk printing which was very important to me) in one unit. It looks nice, but almost from day one it's been trouble - dodgy paper feed, failing to recognise cartridges, poor quality, dropouts, paper jams. And after not having it for that long, it's now telling me the ink pads are full and the thing is in need of a service - probably something to do with the endless cleaning cycles it seems to run - but the worst thing is that this warning has effectively bricked the device - meaning I can't even use it just as a scanner. Surely if the ink pads are full, it should disable printing functions but still allow access to it's other functions - but it just flashes lights at you, tells you it needs servicing, and the only option it allows is to switch it off. I'm off tomorrow to buy a HP - and to take a hammer to the Epson (won't be the first Epson I've destroyed for the pure cathartic pleasure. Just utter rubbish.
