 "HP photosmart printer" 2010-08-10

The printer arrived on time.

It looks very smart and works well.

It uses quite a lot of ink though, but the printing is clear and looks good.

It also scans and copies. No problems so far....

"HP C4280 all in one printer" 2010-07-08
By RMcL
This is an old model now and my only reason for adding a review at this late stage is to warn anyone against buying one. From new the C4280 has failed to feed photo paper properly, a major shortcoming for a home photo printer. The quality of the photo prints (when they do feed) is well under par compared to my much older Epson printer. The software takes almost an hr to load onto an XP powered PC and it was always easy to end up having to re-load (with 3 PCs and an iMac in the house, I have been kept busy). More importantly, the printer driver/interface is painful compared to other (non-HP) printers. For example, there is hardly any flexibility in printing differing photos on a single sheet of paper when using the HP utilities. The interface for the PC probably cost HP millions to develop but there is no question as to the interface for the Apple Mac which must have been prepared in 5 min on the back of an old price tag - it is simply dreadful and it is virtually impossible to print what you want to print. Again for the iMac, the scanner output when saved as a PDF document turns out to be an oversized image which only prints correctly if various PDF print settings are made - this is ok when you have 'discovered how' and are home printing but an inconvenience when posting the PDF file to an external recipient. For a PC user, the scanner works well. All in all, this printer was as bad as each of my 2 HP laptops and I will never buy another HP product.

 "Strongly advise against buying" 2010-05-13
By J. Lamb (London,UK)
I have never written a review for a product before ,but I am moved to write about this as it is so bad.

I am very computer and technology literate and I have never encountered such disappointing product.

Maybe it is because I am Apple based.

This printer is always a problem, the paper jams, the ink is extortionate, half the time the scanner won't scan, its slow, noisy .

I have recently installed a new driver and its still useless.

I use Epson printers professionally at work and they are rarely a problem.

I won't be troubling HP again.

By P. H. Metcalfe
good printer, works well at printing everyday and photo, the sanner is good and also the memory card reader functions but it does suffer from the hp compatibility software although hp have brought out updates which i recommend installing before use as the software caused microsoft office to crash and had trouble with windows 7 but since updates hp brought out last month has been fine and worked great with xp only vista it had issues with before hp brought out the fixes,

The printer itself is great and i have owned for 2 years and is still working great after heavy use.

"Ok for about 5 months" 2009-10-28
By Charles Lister-james (St Andrews, Scotland)
This product worked ok for about 5 months and then started failing and then it went completely broke and I will never get an HP printer again. I have had this happen 3 times now. They are cheap, true, but they aren't really printers, they just throw ink on paper. If you are looking for a cheap device than by all means buy it, but my thought is to invest a little more and get a decent printer that will last much longer and be much more useful than this one.

By Mr. L. J. Morris (Norfolk England)
The Photos are very good but if you update your PC and use Vista then the driver supplied is not recognised and it is impossible to find anyone at Sagem that wants to know you or answer the phone or return emails except to say it is not their product or Sagem was sold off. I am stuck with a printer and 2 120 print Sagem printing kits. Not recommended.

"Causes us so much stress" 2009-12-29
By P. Bradley
We are still struggling with this printer after having it for about 3 years! The problems start when printing onto photo paper. Images print in the wrong place or only part of the image is printed. Have tried many different software programs and print settings but there is no logic to it. Keep the settings the same and still get variable results. The only thing that this printer is good at is identifying when you have used compatible ink cartridges rather than genuine HP cartridges.

I would go as far as to say that I hate this printer!

 "A dreadful printer" 2009-02-25
By A. Gibbons
I have owned this printer for 18 months or more. I am actually on this website to buy a new printer because this one is so very very dreadful and I have now had enough of it. List of common problems :-

1) Chewing paper

2) Refusing to cancel jobs

3) Wont turn off properly - you'll just have to unplug it.

4) Will print letterbox photos...when it feels like it.

5) Software hangs

I have installed and reinstalled the software and drivers on several occasions and i regulary reinstall Windows. It makes no difference. In short this is a very temperamental printer and you'll regret buying it.

 "Canon SELPHY CP-400" 2005-10-13
By Rich Milligan (Thatcham, Berkshire)
The promised saying of "Plug and Play" has been around for sometime now, but with the Canon SELPHY CP-400 Compact Photo Printer it's really refreshing to find that with some pieces of equipment it's a motto that's quite true.

The CP-400 is small and compact and looks good. It's incredibly easily to assemble, requiring the user only to insert the toner cartridge, put the paper in the paper holder and insert this and finally plug it in.

Having the ability to print from both PC and directly from your digital camera is brilliant. Connections are made via a standard USB cable (these aren't supplied and you will need a different cable for PC to Printer and Camera to Printer).

In the case of connecting it to your camera, I have a Canon Powershot A75, you literally plug the cable in, the blue light flashes on the camera and it's a one-button press to print. In case of PC to Printer you need to install the included drivers and software but after that, again it's just press the print button and away you go. One nice advantage of printer from the camera via the cable to the printer means you can hold the camera and manipulate the photo you want to print, i.e. on a docking station you need to get down to the level of the printer to do all this.

Watching the printer is an experience it itself. The printer drags the paper through itself three times, applying the different colours, yellow, red and finally blue. The picture is then ejected and seems to still develop for a couple of seconds afterwards, i.e. let it dry and finish before handling it too much.

The quality is great and gives an excellent reproduction of the picture you've originally taken. The printer is at the budget end of the market so the picture quality is not perfect but certainly for family snaps it's fine.

It's small, it's cheap and most importantly it works first time and the expression on the faces of my parents as we took their photo with their grandchildren and then minutes later they were holding the photo was work the outlay in itself.

A very neat little printer, very good colour printing and amazing to watch the printing process.
Downside is it only comes with a combined set of postcards/ink for FIVE postcards.Try and find packs of cards and ink on this website !!!!!
Either give more postcard/ink with the printer or make ordering new supplies a much easier task.
This was a present for my son and was redundant after an hour of unpacking it on Xmas Day and still is.

 "Beautiful and Stunning Prints" 2009-07-05
By Aural 88 (London, UK)
My printer arrived swiftly using the next day option and I was shocked by the size of the box - it's big people. My shock turned to wonder as my brother and I removed the printer from it's box - I have to say I was stunned by the build quality of this product. It feels as if it means business (it's even got wheels on it).

Setting up the printer was straightforward using the (excellent) support information supplied by Canon. I then matched my photo software (lightroom 2 & elements 6) to the printer using the supplied information; again this was very straightforward, and trust me man! this is a key step to producing beautiful prints.

I then sourced the media and suppplies for the printer and have had absolutely no problems in getting a hold of replacement cartridges or paper - I wouldn't advise buying them on the high street (I get mine online)!

After all that down to the printing and I was stunned (again) at the sublte tones the printer revealed when I printed an image of the Paphos coastline, it was renderered so beautifully that the image jumps of the page to transport you to the sea. lovely stuff. Quality is consistently high in all of the images and I am so glad that I purchased this printer - now you might think that I'm easily stunned :) but I can assure you that I'm a hard man to please!

so far, so good - no problems to report...

I wrote my original review about 8 months ago - it's March 2010 now. Since then I have downloaded updates from canon for various paper types and for the printer driver (I use vista). Well people, I remain stunned! so much so that I am revising my review.

When I show off my photos people are amazed that I produce such high quality prints from home, consequently they are interested in seeing more of my work and using me as a photographer.

I feared that I had missed a trick by not getting the mark 2 version; whilst I should say I haven't used the mark 2, I must say that, for me, the quality of this printer has stood the test of time.

In summary I would still recommend this canon printer.

Personally I would not buy this printer purely because the inks are very expensive and DO NOT LAST - because the tanks themselves are too small. Canon should reduce the cost of these tanks.

 "Loves ink!" 2009-03-26
By G. Rogers (Barnstaple,North Devon.)
This is a great printer and works well. That's the upside. It really is a good printer. Don't buy this unless you're running XP or later. It might work with NT but I'm not 100% sure. It will NOT work with 98 or ME as Amazon tell you and still tell you after I've written to them five or six times over the last two and a half years telling them they're wrong! The first time I contacted them about this was after I'd bought this printer new on the strength of their description. Fired up the printer and got a message on my pc screen stating "Will not work with this operating system" Amazon were sympathetic and informed me that they got all their product info from manufacturers so I got in touch with Canon who's reaction to this was basically "Tough, go get a new pc" and me not being very happy with this contacted them again, several times in fact, each time being completely ignored. I even said in my last email to them that I was thinking of passing all the info to the office of fair trading or the advertising standards agency and their reaction? Nothing, not even a snotty "Go ahead then" reply. For a company that sets such high standards, I think their customer care is unbelieveably poor. But it's still a good printer!

"A Printer for making prints" 2008-10-28
By John Sheldon (Herefordshire, England)
I acquired this printer, and downloaded the drivers etc online (yes, Canon unlike so many other printer manufacturers have fully responded to Windows Vista and made compliant versions of every driver, ICC profile and piece of software for this product, including a new driver that enables the XPS 16-bit per channel capabilities on Vista! These are free to download). I configured my photo editing system to recognise the ICC profile of my monitor and that of the Canon PRO9500 - and the result is that the prints are exactly what I expect from what I see on the screen.

So as I say, this is a printer for making prints. What I may spend in printer ink (see other reviews) will, I think, be made up for by my ability to dispense with test prints (except perhaps for very very difficult pictures) and the absence of wasted paper and ink on prints that do not look like the screen image.

I would recommend the Canon PIXMA PRO9500 to anyone who is prepared to spend some time finding out how to configure their computer system to take advantage of it, and who does not need a dye based ink printer!

"Excellent Printer But Requires Patience!" 2008-06-13
By TR Winn (Cambridge, England)
I have owned this printer for nearly a year, using it to produce upto A3+, colour and black and white prints that I sell. The bottom line? The printer delivers superb quality images that are unrivalled by many other printers.

However, as the other reviewer has said I do have a few niggles! Firstly, the printer does tend to over saturate colours, particularly the reds, so prints are slightly warmer when produced straight out of the box as it were. However, this is easily changed by playing with the intensity, contrast and colour controls. You also need to experiment with a range of papers to find what works best - canon premium matte is very good as are the Ilford papers - however, certain Epson papers can also work perfectly well. You need to make sure that papers are pigment ink compatible and have ICC profiles available. Without altering the settings prints can also be too dark and therefore lose detail on certain images.

Ink is another niggle. In that it's not widely available, and expensive - however shop around on the internet as you can find it much cheaper than its £11.99 RRP. Inks last a reasonable amount of time unless your printing lots of A3+, and it last significantly longer than when the printer prompts you to change the cartridge; I'd wait until it's flat out to change (although some users note colour shifts with low levels of ink - I can't say that I've noticed!) You need to make sure that you order inks well in advance as you can't simply nip to the shop to get a refill.

Versus the Epson R2400; many debates on this and I don't have much experience with the latter printer - however, I feel that the Canon is better built, the 2400 seems more plastic, the Canon is solid and robust (you need a lot of desk space by the way!). The software is also superior, the photoshop plug-in gives you great options for altering colours and contrast etc. However, I use it straight from Lightroom. As to print quality there's probably not much in it, however, given that this is a ten cartridge printer, the colour gamut should be greater and black and white definitely reigns on this printer.

Overall this is a great printer if you want professional looking prints

to sell, however, you do need to put in the time to research and be prepared for much trial and error, especially if you're a perfectionist!
