My printer arrived swiftly using the next day option and I was shocked by the size of the box - it's big people. My shock turned to wonder as my brother and I removed the printer from it's box - I have to say I was stunned by the build quality of this product. It feels as if it means business (it's even got wheels on it).
Setting up the printer was straightforward using the (excellent) support information supplied by Canon. I then matched my photo software (lightroom 2 & elements 6) to the printer using the supplied information; again this was very straightforward, and trust me man! this is a key step to producing beautiful prints.
I then sourced the media and suppplies for the printer and have had absolutely no problems in getting a hold of replacement cartridges or paper - I wouldn't advise buying them on the high street (I get mine online)!
After all that down to the printing and I was stunned (again) at the sublte tones the printer revealed when I printed an image of the Paphos coastline, it was renderered so beautifully that the image jumps of the page to transport you to the sea. lovely stuff. Quality is consistently high in all of the images and I am so glad that I purchased this printer - now you might think that I'm easily stunned :) but I can assure you that I'm a hard man to please!
so far, so good - no problems to report...
I wrote my original review about 8 months ago - it's March 2010 now. Since then I have downloaded updates from canon for various paper types and for the printer driver (I use vista). Well people, I remain stunned! so much so that I am revising my review.
When I show off my photos people are amazed that I produce such high quality prints from home, consequently they are interested in seeing more of my work and using me as a photographer.
I feared that I had missed a trick by not getting the mark 2 version; whilst I should say I haven't used the mark 2, I must say that, for me, the quality of this printer has stood the test of time.
In summary I would still recommend this canon printer.
By Mr. M. Warrick
Personally I would not buy this printer purely because the inks are very expensive and DO NOT LAST - because the tanks themselves are too small. Canon should reduce the cost of these tanks.

This is a great printer and works well. That's the upside. It really is a good printer. Don't buy this unless you're running XP or later. It might work with NT but I'm not 100% sure. It will NOT work with 98 or ME as Amazon tell you and still tell you after I've written to them five or six times over the last two and a half years telling them they're wrong! The first time I contacted them about this was after I'd bought this printer new on the strength of their description. Fired up the printer and got a message on my pc screen stating "Will not work with this operating system" Amazon were sympathetic and informed me that they got all their product info from manufacturers so I got in touch with Canon who's reaction to this was basically "Tough, go get a new pc" and me not being very happy with this contacted them again, several times in fact, each time being completely ignored. I even said in my last email to them that I was thinking of passing all the info to the office of fair trading or the advertising standards agency and their reaction? Nothing, not even a snotty "Go ahead then" reply. For a company that sets such high standards, I think their customer care is unbelieveably poor. But it's still a good printer!
By John Sheldon (Herefordshire, England)
I acquired this printer, and downloaded the drivers etc online (yes, Canon unlike so many other printer manufacturers have fully responded to Windows Vista and made compliant versions of every driver, ICC profile and piece of software for this product, including a new driver that enables the XPS 16-bit per channel capabilities on Vista! These are free to download). I configured my photo editing system to recognise the ICC profile of my monitor and that of the Canon PRO9500 - and the result is that the prints are exactly what I expect from what I see on the screen.
So as I say, this is a printer for making prints. What I may spend in printer ink (see other reviews) will, I think, be made up for by my ability to dispense with test prints (except perhaps for very very difficult pictures) and the absence of wasted paper and ink on prints that do not look like the screen image.
I would recommend the Canon PIXMA PRO9500 to anyone who is prepared to spend some time finding out how to configure their computer system to take advantage of it, and who does not need a dye based ink printer!

I have owned this printer for nearly a year, using it to produce upto A3+, colour and black and white prints that I sell. The bottom line? The printer delivers superb quality images that are unrivalled by many other printers.
However, as the other reviewer has said I do have a few niggles! Firstly, the printer does tend to over saturate colours, particularly the reds, so prints are slightly warmer when produced straight out of the box as it were. However, this is easily changed by playing with the intensity, contrast and colour controls. You also need to experiment with a range of papers to find what works best - canon premium matte is very good as are the Ilford papers - however, certain Epson papers can also work perfectly well. You need to make sure that papers are pigment ink compatible and have ICC profiles available. Without altering the settings prints can also be too dark and therefore lose detail on certain images.
Ink is another niggle. In that it's not widely available, and expensive - however shop around on the internet as you can find it much cheaper than its £11.99 RRP. Inks last a reasonable amount of time unless your printing lots of A3+, and it last significantly longer than when the printer prompts you to change the cartridge; I'd wait until it's flat out to change (although some users note colour shifts with low levels of ink - I can't say that I've noticed!) You need to make sure that you order inks well in advance as you can't simply nip to the shop to get a refill.
Versus the Epson R2400; many debates on this and I don't have much experience with the latter printer - however, I feel that the Canon is better built, the 2400 seems more plastic, the Canon is solid and robust (you need a lot of desk space by the way!). The software is also superior, the photoshop plug-in gives you great options for altering colours and contrast etc. However, I use it straight from Lightroom. As to print quality there's probably not much in it, however, given that this is a ten cartridge printer, the colour gamut should be greater and black and white definitely reigns on this printer.
Overall this is a great printer if you want professional looking prints
to sell, however, you do need to put in the time to research and be prepared for much trial and error, especially if you're a perfectionist!

I've had this printer for 4-5 months now. When set to high quality mode, there's no doubt that this is a great photo printer. However, it's not particularly good with standard quality settings. Despite using canon inks, alligning print heads and ensuring that all nozzles are clean - standard print mode results in horizontal banding. The printer has ben replaced once and the new one is the same. I'm a bit disappointed.

I bought this in December 2008 (it's September 2009 now) and have to say this thing really is the dogs do dahs. The depth and saturation of colour is perfect and when printing on heavy paper can get close to matching professional quality. Highly recommended.

If you want to create brilliant, crystal clear photos, and want a special purpose photo printer - get this. It worked right out of the box and in minutes I had some beautiful prints, with clarity I had not seen before. I am a point and shooter for pics of the kids not a pro photographer - in fact I know nothing about the technicalities/changing colour/light etc - these were just straight off my digital camera and onto the printer. Class.

I'm a professional graphic designer, so I need a good quality printer. I bought this product almost a year ago, but have never managed to get perfect prints. I think I must have had a bad example, as all other reviews rave about it. My prints always had lines running through the images, even after running through the set up with Canon support. The colours always looked good on prints though, but the lines were unacceptable.
I also had an issue with the cost of the inks. Virtually every time I printed, I had an error message saying an ink tank was empty. You can ignore the messages until the ink is totally run out, but with 8 ink tanks, it costs almost £80 to replace a full set.
Amazon were great, they could see that I still had a faulty printer, even after having help from Canon. They gave me a full refund on the printer, and I've now ordered another Canon, but this time a Pixma 5000 as it only has 4 ink tanks. All the reviews I've read are good, and the build quality on the Pro 9000 was good, so time will tell. I looked at other manufacturers, but couldn't find anything with a better review, so thought I'd give Canon another chance.
In summary, I'd suggest that the pro 9000 is good if you print just photographs, but for graphics as well I'd look at other options, possibly the Pixma 5000. With 8 ink tanks, the Pro 9000 is just far too expensive to run.

Quality of Printing after much heartache - 5 out of 5 - Superb
Clear Instructions to get going - 0/5
Ability of Far East Helpline - 1/5
Ability of UK (unadvertised) Helpline - 5/5
The printer almost went back immediately, as our McAfee Antivirus stopped us loading the software, and it was a longwinded online "chat" with McAfee, which saved the day. It most importantly gave us the assurance that the re-enabling would take place easily. This is a serious fault with the Canon software.
I misread the sales literature, and di not realise that A MINIMUM of Photoshop CS2 was needed, so, to start with, my printing attempts were purelu Printer driven, and came out with red castes. It was only when I had the correct version of Photoshop installed, and THE UK HELKPLINE TALKED ME THROUGH THE DISABLING OF THE PRINTER DRIVE, so that printing was Photoshop driven, that i am getting the superb prints I expected from the reports on the web.
I am not yet out of the wood, and still have the niggle that the printer does not hold its setting print to print, unless I reset through the Contro Panel, a real irritating bind!!!
The above is a gross simplification of my first 5 weeks of ownership, virtually full time trying to get the printer doing what I expected, so wasting a great deal of photo paper and ink.

Not a bad printer if you only use A3 paper, but if you load A4 in the top tray, the printer sucks in 10 sheets at a time, along with some A3 sheets too, and gives a big paper jam.
Mine went back to Amazon for a full refund.

WOW, I really can't believe some of the reviews of this printer that I have read elsewhere. I read one Computer magazine review that complained about speed and said it took 2.5 seconds to produce a page. How quickly do you need a page to print for heaven's sake? For black and white, draft mode is sufficient in most cases. It speeds things up and uses less ink as well!
I am a photographer and I use the K7100 to print both A3 and A4. These are photos going to clients. They are happy with them and so am I. The A3 prints can lead to sharp intakes of breath when clients see them. Yes, they take a while to print but quality takes time.
It is quite evident that some reviewers, including Computer magazines, haven't got a clue how to use the driver to get the best out of a printer. It is also clear that they are dreaming of some mystical printer that churns out full A3 size photographs at the rate of one every 0.5 seconds.
Do not be put off by reviews. This is a great printer. Experiment with different print qualities and settings. Get to know and use the driver and I guarantee you will reap the benefits.
There are better, and faster printers out there but they are twice the price of the K7100. And the quality/speed might be no better unless you go through experimentation stage.
By the way - mine works great on my wireless network. It is physically connected to a desktop and shared with laptops that connect wirelessly.

As a sundial designer my need is for very precise and detailed images with dense black lines on hi-tech film. I am delighted with the performance of the K7100 A3 printer in this respect. Amazing value for money.

Actually great printer, but just started having problems which I would like some help with. The printer has started producing about 8mm wide banding verrtical on a landscape print. Tried all the cartridge cleaning etc, no difference. Please could you help me solve this problem; as I am wasting expensive A3 photo paper !!!!!
Thanks Nigel

I purchased this printer as a replacement for my deskjet 6940 reasons being i needed to be able to print on A3 paper and the K7100 is ideal i recieved it 4 days after ordering it was in perfect condition, after setting it up it took me a few days to get the setting right with AutoCad but when i got it sorted it hasn't failed to impress with it brillant speeds and print quality.
